우리가 동경하는 많은 영화배우, 가수, 스포츠 스타 등, 흔히 말하는 셀러브리티들은 멋진 차와 호화로운 집을 가졌다. 특히 결혼 소식에는 럭셔리한 호텔 웨딩이 빠지지 않는다. 연예인이 대중에게 미치는 파급력은 막강하다. 특히 한국사회에서 대중이 연예인에 대해 갖는 관심은 다른 어느 나라 보다 크다. 최근 일부 연예인은 트위터와 페이스북 등으로 일반 대중들과 소통하면서 인간적이고 친근한 모습을 보여주고 있다. 한국의 셀러브리티들이 이런 매체를 통해 환경에 대한 의식적인 행동을 대중에게 보여준다면 어떨까? 해외에는 이미 환경에 대한 경각심을 갖고 실천으로 옮기는 의식 있는 스타들이 있었다. 그들은 저마다 자신이 관심 있는 분야, 혹은 기여할 수 있는 매체를 통해 친환경을 실천한다. 얼루어, 바자, 엘르 등의 잡지나 각종 미디어에서는 그들의 행동을 사람들에게 알리고 매년 그린 셀럽이라는 이름으로 가장 친환경적인 스타를 꼽기도 한다. 어떻게 보여지고 어떤 분야에서 활동하고 있는지 살펴보자.

 
 나탈리 포트만

 얼마 전 블랙 스완으로 임팩트 있는 연기를 선보여 지성과 연기력, 외모를 두루 지닌 스타로 인정받은 나탈리 포트만은 철저한 채식주의자로 알려져 있다. 동물을 사랑해서 동물에게 해를 끼치는 모든 행위를 반대한다. 르완다 지역을 방문해 멸종 위기에 처한 고릴라를 위한 다큐를 제작하기도 했다. 특히 얼마 전 열린 오스카 시상식의 오프닝 파티 때 H&M의 에코컬렉션, Conscious Collection라인을 입고 나타나 화제가 됐다. 레드카펫에서는 함께 환경의식을 공유하고 있는 디자이너 스텔라 메카트니의 드레스를 입었다. 또한 최근에 발레리노 벤자민 마일피드와 약혼했는데 백금과 골동품을 재활용하고 공정거래된 다이아몬드로 장식된 반지를 선택해 주목을 끌었다.

 브래드 피트

 특히 건축 분야에서 두드러지게 선구적인 활동을 보여주고 있는 브래드 피트. 2008년 Make it right이라는 재단을 설립해 카트리나 태풍 때 집을 잃은 뉴올리언스 주민들에게 150여 개의 친환경 주택을 건설해 준 “핑크프로젝트”는 이미 유명하다. 이 집은 지열 난방 시스템, 태양광 패널 전기를 사용하며 제로 임팩트 재료들로만 건축되었다. 최근에는 GRAFT라는 건축회사와 연계하여 두바이에 5성급 친환경호텔을 건설하려고 한다.

 

 엠마 왓슨

 셀럽들이 주종목 외 가장 많이 손대는 분야는 패션과 메이크업일 것이다. 우리나라에서도 마찬가지라 최근 몇몇 연예인들이 구두, 가방부터 코스메틱 패키지 등 많은 브랜드와 콜라보레이션했는데 얼굴만 몇 번 내밀고 디자인에 참여했다고 하여 빈축을 샀다. 한편 영원한 헤르미온느 엠마 왓슨은 공정무역으로 유명한 패션브랜드 피플트리와 함께 2009년부터 매 시즌마다 자신의 이름을 걸고 친환경라인을 런칭 하고 있다. 실제로 Design Advisor로서 활동해왔는데, 가장 최근 2011년 4월에는 디자이너 알베르타 페레티와 함께 Pure Threads라 불리는 라인을 제작했다. 이는 포플린 모슬린 등의 지속가능한 소재로 만들어졌으며 국제 유기농섬유기준에 따라 엄격하게 제작된 제품이다.

 오프라 윈프리

 그녀는 자신이 진행하는 토크쇼를 통해 친환경 관련 인사를 초대하고 에코제품을 소개한다. “불편한 진실”을 제작한 전 미국부통령 앨 고어를 직접 초대해 지구온난화에 대한 경계심을 호소했다. 그녀는 자신의 웹사이트(www.oprah.com)에 지속적으로 친환경 뉴스와 상품을 업데이트 하는데 얼마 전엔 TreeHugger와 함께 Going Green 캠페인을 진행하며 지구의 날을 기념하고, 친환경에 대한 작은 조언들을 올려놨다. 오프라 윈프리 북클럽에서는 “그린북(부제-지구를 구하기 위한 매일의 간단 가이드)”를 출간하였다.

 

 카메론 디아즈

 MTV에서 방영된 리얼리티 쇼 “트리핀”에 출현해 오지를 돌아다니며 환경지킴이로서의 모습을 보여주었다. 급기야 최근엔 자신의 이름을 직접 내걸고 사람들이 마시는 물과 공기의 유해물질에 대해 이야기하는 다큐멘터리를 제작했다. 런치박스가 종이상자와 플라스틱 수저, 종이컵 등의 패키지로 이루어진 것에 대해 경각심을 가진 그녀는 기네스 팰트로와 함께 친환경 런치박스도 직접 디자인했다. 수익금은 뉴욕 푸드뱅크와 런치박스 기금에 전달된다고 한다. 플리마켓, 중고샵을 이용하고 그린 패브릭과 가구로 집안을 장식하는 등 생활 곳곳에서 에코라이프를 실천하고 있다.

 한국에서도 최근 한 연예인이 지구의 날 홍보대사로 위촉되어 “에코걸”로 불리고 있지만 그녀가 자발적으로 에코활동을 한 근거나 흔적은 볼 수가 없었다. 일부 최강희나 박진희 등 의식 있는 셀럽들이 그런 모습을 보여주고 있긴 하지만 해외스타에 비하면 아직도 미미하다. 많은 한국의 셀럽들도 버라이어티에서 입담만 과시하기보다는 개념 있는 행동으로 대중에게 모범이 되고 뿌듯한 뉴스를 전해주길 바란다.

They're hot, they're celebrities, and they believe in saving the Earth. But what's better is that they all have one thing in common (besides the environment) -- they're single! We've listed some of our favorite eco-hotties below because, well, we could have a chance, right? Heck, we do share the same interests. So catch them while you can, they won't be single for long!

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

Our heart skipped a beat when we heard that eco-hottie Leonardo DiCaprio and supermodel Bar Refaeli split a few months ago. While the couple is known to be on-again off-again, this time it's apparently for good. People reported that Refaeli wanted to move too quickly causing DiCaprio to have doubts about their relationship. Um, raise of hands please, who would be happy to take it slow with Leo? We thought so. Although lately he's been on the set of his new movie, Inception, Ecorazzi reports that DiCaprio was recently looking for some new digs in L.A., built with sustainable materials and eco-conscious construction techniques. Of course. By the way, if you haven't seen his eco Web site, you should definitely check it out.

2. Daryl Hannah

Through her Web site DHLoveLife, the foxy Daryl Hannah updates us with the latest news (good and bad) about the environment, alerts us to issues that need our attention, and sells sustainable goods as well. Hannah has been a longtime friend of TreeHugger and she's made news on our site many times, from her arrests to her water testing to eco-tourism. This TreeHugger even got the chance to meet her last year at a movie premier with Jean-Michel Cousteau. Hannah had a long-term relationship with Jackson Browne back in the 80s and early 90s and, while she has been linked to other well-known people (JFK, Jr., Val Kilmer, and Brad Renfro who tragically died in 2008), she has never been married. Maybe her love for biodiesel comes first?

3. Cameron Diaz

Known for wanting to save the world, Cameron Diaz told Britain's GQ magazine that she also is pretty content being single. "It's the first time I haven't had a boyfriend in, like, 10 years and I'm enjoying what I'm getting out of this moment," Diaz said. She and Justin Timberlake split a few years ago and Diaz has been actively involved in the green community. "I could be in a relationship if I wanted to be but I haven't finished doing what I'm doing," she said. You go girl, you go.

4. John Mayer

Once called a "Groovy Tree-Hugger" by Rolling Stone Magazine, John Mayer is no stranger to eco-issues. The brand from his last tour, AKOG (Another Kind of Green,) was inspired by the environment and included bio-diesel buses, eco-friendly merchandise for sale, waste reduction and recycling backstage, and sourcing sustainable supplies and local food. We wonder what he has in store for the next tour? Mayer has dated a slew of Hollywood hotties: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Minka Kelly and, most recently, Jennifer Aniston. He accompanied Aniston to the Oscars in 2009 and, while rumor had it they were planning a green wedding, the couple split three weeks later.

5. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman doesn't seem to be one for the spotlight. But she sure has made heads turn. Granted, we've loved Portman since her role in Beautiful Girls. You may have seen her a few weeks ago on TV show Top Chef, instructing the chefs to cook a vegan meal for her. Last year she made an appearance on Project Runway in which the contestants were challenged to design a look made from green materials. If you haven't guessed, both shows had a theme: They were based on Portman's strong animal rights beliefs. She does not eat animal products and does not wear fur, leather, or feathers. While Portman has a strong love for fashion, she claims that all of her shoes are from Target and Stella McCartney (her own vegan shoe line was a flop, alas). Portman's young love life has been pretty quiet, and her last relationship with Venezuelan folk singer Devendra Banhart ended about a year ago.

6. Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has been known to be outspoken for various causes, and lucky for us one of those is environmentalism. He was recently the spokesperson for the U.S. Open, along with the US Tennis Association and the National Resources Defense Council, promoting the green initiatives that were in place for the event. Baldwin was married to Kim Basinger for almost 12 years, and apparently the two have been going through some tough custody battles. But he told The New York Post back in 2008 that he still believes in love. "Oh yeah, I do. I've been single for seven years and as I get older, I think all I want is to be loved." We're open for hugs, Alec, anytime you need one.

7. Pamela Anderson

While her marriages and relationships have made headlines again and again, Pamela Anderson is also known for her outrageous PETA stunts. She has raised loads of money for the organization, mostly with her clothes off, and has campaigned against seal hunting, the use of fur, fruit-juice maker POM, and even Kentucky Fried Chicken. Although her personal life has been in the spotlight for years, many might not know that Anderson has been a vegetarian since her early teens when she saw her father cleaning an animal that he had hunted -- a trauma that made her very active with animal rights campaigns.
