자연이 있는 도시?, Urban Greening
파리는 최근 ‘지속가능한 파리’를 만들기 위해 노력하고 있다. 많은 이들이 알고 있듯 재생에너지 사용 정책에서부터 친자전거 정책까지 Green thinking을 위한 대안들을 꾸준히 내놓았고 또 성공시켜왔다. 이의 일환으로 시에서 또 하나 밀고 있는 운동이 Urban Greening이다. 생태적 관리를 위해 디자인된 82개의 공원과 60여 개의 커뮤니티 정원 속에서 파리지앵들은 직접 음식을 길러먹고 아이들과 함께 자연적 공간을 즐기고 있다. 대상 지역들은 물과 에너지, 화학제품의 사용을 줄이는 것을 일차적 목적으로 하며 흙의 질, 생물적 다양성, 쓰레기 관리, 공원 방문자들의 행동 등 다각적인 분석을 통해 마련된 기준에 따라 관리된다. 또 파리 시는 커뮤니티 내부에서 정원을 만드는 사업도 함께 추진하고 있는데 커뮤니티의 예로서는 병원, 실버 타운, 학교 등이 포함된다. 시는 함께 공유할 수 있는 정원에 대한 자세한 가이드를 제시하고 있으며 주말에는 이 곳에서 경작된 수확물을 판매하기도 한다. 그럴 듯한 건물의 렌더링이나 미래적인 도시설계가 아닌 지극히 소박한 이 정책은 Urban Greening에 대한 현실적인 대안으로서 더욱 체계화 되어가고 있다.
Urban Greening에 대한 욕구는 오래 전부터 있어왔다. 얼마 전부터 한국에서 유행한 ‘귀농’ 또한 도시의 삶에 염증을 느끼고 자연으로 돌아가 자연 속에서 즐기고 살고자 하는 욕구에서 비롯된 것이리라. Urban Greening은 도시민의 이런 자연에 대한 갈망을 그 안에서 해결코자 하는 대안으로서 빗물 저장, 수경농법, 바이오 테크놀로지 등 기술을 이용하여 도시에서의 녹색생활을 가능케 하는 것이다. 이 아이디어는 다양한 형태로 최근 더욱 발전하고 있다. 간단하게는 지난 번 언급했던 transition town(http://ecoroko.com/226) 안에서의 도시 내 경작, 자급자족의 모습으로 보이기도 하고, 고층 건물과 녹색과의 조화로 보다 미래적인 모습으로 보여지기도 한다.
뉴욕에서는 2006년에 Urban Greening의 상징적 수단으로 허드슨 강 한가운데 Science Barge라 불리는 배를 띄웠다. 지구온난화, 식량고갈, 운송수단의 정지, 화석연료 고갈 등의 문제에 대한 대안으로 제시될 수 있는 시스템과 기술을 모두 담고 있는 이 배는, 에너지를 가장 많이 소비하는 도시인 뉴욕에서 재생에너지를 사용하여 도시 내 에너지 공급과 식량자족 가능성을 보여주는 Urban Greening의 대표적 심볼로서 기능하고 있다.

또 다른 아이디어로 이태리 롬바디 지역의 상업화, 도시화 문제에 대한 고민과 함께 Studio Shift의 디자이너들이 제시한 프로젝트가 있다. 아파트와 농업, 태양열, 빗물활용 및 관개시설 등이 어우러진 Farm the gap이라는 아이디어이다. 높은 인구가 밀집된 지역에서 어떻게 자급자족 할 수 있는지, 땅에 대한 니즈는 증가하는데 그 수요를 감당할 수 없을 때에 대한 솔루션을 보여주는 아이디어다. 엄청난 인구밀도를 자랑하는 서울에서 참고로 할 만한 Urban Greening의 모습일 것이다.

우리나라에서도 최근 첨단기술을 이용하여 빌딩을 녹색화하려는 시도들이 있기는 하지만 아직 걸음마 수준이다. 단순히 ‘도시 내에서 자연을 즐기자’라는 인간 중심적인 컨셉 보다는 기술, 환경, 에너지, 그리고 인간까지 모두를 염두에 둔 통합적인 아이디어가 진정한 Urban Greening을 실현할 수 있는 대안이 될 것이다.
