8 Electric Concept Cars Shaking Up the Auto Industry Right Now

by Brian Merchant, Brooklyn, New York on 03. 8.10

Most of the excitement at Geneva this year didn't come from the announcement of new production model cars. No, the task of riling up the auto press was left to the hyper-fuel efficient vehicle concepts trotted out by carmakers that represent the best prospects for the cars of the future. Thankfully, there were a slew of them. And most of these aren't pie-in-the-sky dream cars--many are models the automakers say they'll bring to production. From exciting EVs offered by automakers little-known in the states to plug-in electrics from industry heavyweights, here are the seven most intriguing electric concept cars revealed in Geneva this year.

8. Proton EMAS Concepts

Three concept cars from the Malaysian automaker Proton were on display in Geneva. All three are hybrid electrics that make use of the Lotus advanced series-hybrid drivetrain. The three concepts are a 5-door, 4-seater hatchback EMAS, a hatchback "EMAS Country" crossover concept, and a 3-door, 3+1 plus-seater EMAS3 designed for urban driving. These are exciting not only for the Lotus powertrain, but for the fact that Proton has sold some 3 million cars in Asia and could make major green inroads into its burgeoning markets should the EMAS hit production.

7. Ferrari 599 HY-KERS
A hybrid Ferrari? Blasphemy. Paradoxical. Oxymoronic. Pandering. A stunt. I have just captured the mood of the reaction from auto aficionados upon hearing about Ferrari's hybrid concept. Details are scarce (though claims of emissions reductions of 35% abound), and this thing won't get made anytime soon, it gets a nod here simply for blaspheming and reflecting the fact that regardless of the reason (incoming clean car regs, publicity) a green(ish) car could even emerge from Ferrari.

6. Seat IBE
The Seat IBE, the electric concept car revealed by the Spanish automaker at Geneva, looks kind of awesome. No, that is not just this humble reporter's opinion. It is an objective fact. I mean, just look at it. Sort of has a Deceptecon-esque quality to it, no? Little is known about the IBE--I couldn't get the spokesperson at the show floor to give me any stats--but Seat has confirmed that the car will be made, if not before a hybrid electric version is brought to market.

5. Honda 3R-C
A joke, or a vision of a highly mobile, emissions-free future? Sometimes, it's tough to tell with these concept cars. But the 3R-C has attracted enough attention to warrant its inclusion here--many say they'd gladly take the electric cyber-motorcycle home. Others feel that it belongs on a set of (insert sci-fi film here) and will never see mass production.

4. Audi A-1 E-tron
Yes, Justin Timberlake was on board to roll out the new Audi A1 mini-car (enduring awkward onstage banter and surely a deluge of endorsement checks). No, that wasn't nearly as exciting as the revealing of Audi's latest E-tron concept, also for the A1--a plug-in electric hybrid that reportedly gets 31 miles on a charge, and 128 more with its range extender. 0-62 is reportedly 10.2 seconds. If Audi was ever actually going to make an electric car, I'd put my money on this one.

3. Kia Venga EV
The Kia Venga electric concept car is most exciting for one reason in particular--it's a whole hell of a lot more feasible to head to production than anything that looks like Robocop could have driven it to work. Based on the model of Venga already in production now, this EV concept supposedly gets around 112 miles per charge and looks ideal for city driving. Mike looks at the specs of the Venga EV in greater depth here.

2. Opel GTE
The General Motors-owned Opel unveiled an EV concept that makes use of the Volt powertrain--only the 'Flextreme GTE' is a larger, roomier car. Like the Volt, it has an all-electric 40 mile range, plus an additional 300 miles on gas-assisted hybrid driving. Other notable aspects of what could be Europe's most promising hybrid-electric plug-in include an incredible drag coefficient of 0.22 (which happens to be lower than any production car on the market), a 'transformer' effect where side spoilers emerge when the car reaches speeds above 30 mph, and parts made from aluminum, poly-carbonate, and carbon composites.

1. Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Electric Plug-In
There was a reason this Porsche concept was the biggest story of Geneva 2010--the stunning design from one of the biggest players in performance cars, combined with a deep green statement sent the car scribes scurrying. That it reportedly (and O-so-reportedly) gets 78 mpg, and that Porsche has allegedly never made a concept car it didn't later bring to production, are both reasons to admire what Porsche has done here.

The All-Electric, 3-Wheeled One-Seater: Honda Reveals the 3R-C (Video)

I know what you're thinking. That's a lot of hyphens in the headline. Or maybe that
Honda's 3R-C electric vehicle concept is straight off the set from a RoboCop movie? Or Tron? Or at least that this thing is odd, futuristic, awkward, and most definitely intriguing. Yes, the 3R-C appears to be all of these things, and there seem to be more questions left than answers after Honda officially unveiled it here in Geneva.

In person, the thing kinda looks like a big toy, which is not to say it's not one of the coolest big toys I've ever seen. It's such a cool big toy, in fact, that grown men would likely be seen making friends with that annoying guy up the block who has one, just so they could play with it.

Being touted as another potential for urban mobility, the 3R-C is another maybe-it-could-happen-someday vehicle that looks like it'd be really fun to scoot around in. Here's a quick rundown of the idea behind the beast, via TechEBlog:

The three-wheeler debuted at Geneva, and was set up next to another all-electric concept, the EV-N, both which are pictured here:

The thing is pretty cool--and does seem to be able to address unique mobility needs rather efficiently. Hopefully Honda will bring it out of the woodwork someday.

Self-Powered Laser For Safer Night Cycling (Or A Beam-Me-Up)

Bicycling at night can be a dicey proposition. This is especially true if you’re equipped with the standard-fare reflectors that may or may not reflect properly, depending on the angle of the car headlights hitting you. Bike lights don’t always do the job, since they aim only front and back, and having your bike wrapped up in retro-reflective vinyl like the Bright Bike may not necessarily appeal to you. So here’s another illumined idea we learned about from EcoFriend: industrial designer Leonardo Manavella's self-powered laser that is not only very visible but responds to traffic around it.

Known simply as the “Laser,” it shoots an elliptical beam around your bicycle that makes it seem bigger than it really is – to about the size of a car.

The Laser consists of four adaptable pieces that can be attached with auto adhesive tape: a plastic case, a laser light, a distance sensor and a spherical head to adjust the light, three horns and a battery that is recharged via a dynamo located in the bike wheels.

The laser draws an ellipse of light that is sensitive to anything crossing the perimeter. If a car comes too close, the light becomes red and all the horns will go off – until the car moves away.

As mentioned by EcoFriend, Manavella’s aim was to encourage that

bicyclists start to respect the same rights and restrictions as a car owner does and the car owners are tempted to respect the bicyclists.

Seems like a good idea, since motorists and bicyclists are sharing the same road after all.

Honda
